YouTube generates more searches than Yahoo

YouTube is the most popular video streaming website, but it’s also an immensely popular search engine, accounting for a quarter of the U.S. searches for its parent company, Google, TechCrunch reports. In fact, YouTube generates so many queries that it would be the second largest search engine in the U.S. if it were a standalone website, according to comScore data.

YouTube generated 2.73 billion U.S. searches in November, putting it ahead of Yahoo, the second most popular search engine behind Google. The news probably comes as no surprise to Google, which began selling search ads on YouTube a month ago.

The latest numbers from comScore have Google growing its search market by 0.4 percent, giving it a 63.5 percent share of the U.S. search market in November.  Yahoo’s share of the market fell 0.1 percent to 20.4 percent, while third-place Microsoft lost 0.2 percent of its market share to 8.3 percent.
